10. Hasn’t the research on this crisis already been done?


The John Jay Reports

Through its National Review Board, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops commissioned an in-depth study of the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. The result of that $1.8 million project, spread over the better part of a decade, was presented to the bishops in the form of two reports (each, in turn, with a supplement):

  • The Nature and Scope of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests and Deacons in the United States, 1950-2002 was presented in 2004 (1) (with a supplemental data analysis presented in 2006) (2); and

  • The Causes and Context of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests in the United States, 1950-2010 (3) was presented in 2011 (with an interim report made available in 2009) (4).

The result was a monumental contribution toward understanding
